My final thoughts on Torchwood series 3
So here's the thing: I never liked Ianto! I think he was a theoretically interesting character but Gareth David Lloyd (and I like GDL!) was absolutely the wrong man to play him and he was badly mishandled by the writers.
AND ALSO: I never really bought Jack Harkness as a tragic figure in the first two seasons! I mean, he's immortal! He should feel some things about that! I don't know why his character worked so much better on Doctor Who, but seriously every crossover made me feel like, gosh! there's Jack Harkness, but not so much in Torchwood.
AND SO: BOTH PROBLEMS SOLVED \o/ (Sorry, those of you who liked Ianto, I understand that this is my issue!!)
Other things this series had:
1. Ladies being badass!! Older/non-eyecandy ladies in important roles! The attractive cutthroat assassin lady was not wearing a low cut top and didn't bend over things!! ALL EXCELLENT
2. AMAZING PLOT, especially that bit about the aliens using the children as drugs! 'Cause I totally had it pegged as some longevity thing, and the fact that a) the civil servants had come to the same conclusion, and b) found that easier to rationalize, was compelling and, I felt, realistic. SO MUCH BETTER THAN SEX-ALIENS KILLING WITH ORGASMS
3. Actual character complexity!! I loved Ianto's brother-in-law, who was totally one of those repulsive blue-collar dickweeds who also happened to be an inherently decent man whose first instinct was to help in any way he could.
Basically it was Torchwood trying to be Battlestar Galactica, I know, but Torchwood always wanted to be BSG so I am SO PLEASED that they made an honest attempt at being Adult and Edgy that didn't involve sex-aliens or ass shots. \o/

JACK HARKNESS EXISTS YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.
yeah, Ianto was pretty much my only remaining reason for watching so with that thread cut I'm gone because as you so awesomely note, for some reason Jack only felt like Jack in DW, maybe because I never really took TW seriously?
